Why do people put '#' in front of words on FB?

The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages. I don't know why people are using it on facebook, but I see it too. Maybe they just forget where they are posting.
