I think you should sign up to twitter and search for topics that interest you. For example search for: #londonriots or #libya or #gfc

The hash tag goes at the start of the key term; people place the key terms within their tweets so they they turn up in searches. It takes a bit of getting used to but after a while you will find some great sources of information, and will no longer have to rely on the dumbed down mainstream media.

You will get to know which twitter feeds to follow and key terms to search for as you read through various posts. Many people post links to great articles / blogs from all around the world. You have to of course still critically evaluate the credibility of each article.
