The perk is that you can set it up with a relatively anonymous-looking nickname and make comments to folks you don't necessarily make a commitment to know. You can "follow" (that is, watch their comments on Twitter) and let them "follow" you (that is, watch YOUR comments) as you please, and change your mind at any time.
Compare this to Facebook, where folks become your "friends" and get to know you and send you longer comments and get chummy... More huggy huggy in MY opinion but that's just me, so There! Another perk of Twitter (but then, maybe you don't have to have an account to use it) is http://search.twitter.com where you can search on any topic (kind of like, and almost as good as, GoOgle) and see the latest comments folks are making on that topic: like a REALLY up-to-date search with THE LATEST information!
