No. The Australian Labor Party would be closer to the Democrats. The Liberals are closer to the Republicans on the whole although there are some exceptions. The liberalism in its name refers to classical liberalism with a relatively small state, free markets and individual liberties. Republicans in the US would be the closest equivalent of the Liberal Party in Australia.
