This seems like it would fall more under online reputation management. I can tell you that just increasing links from good sources is not going to push that negative result down. Inbound links is just one of the factors that Google considers. It will take a lot of work. You may consider trying to create some other sites and/ or profiles for your business or keyword where the negative result is displaying. Free social sites can be leveraged, like company Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn pages. This can help to increase positive real estate and hopefully move down that negative listing.
