When you start playing FarmVille on Facebook you have four units of FV Cash, and then you earn one unit for each level you pass.

Besides that case, while coins can be earned by playing the game, the FarmVille Cash can only be purchased with real money through the payment methods offered by Zynga, the gaming company that created this game.

This means players need to spend real money to enjoy some aspects of the game.
