on twitter, when you post an update it goes into your time line, ANYONE who looks you up can see your time line if your page isn't set to private. when you post a message @someone that person can see it, it is also included in the personal time-line (what people see on their personal page) of the people who follow you, and, because YOU posted it anyone who looks up your page can see it if you are not set to private.

for people who follow you, they can see what you post (in general and @someone)

people who you follow but don't follow you, see nothing but when you @their specific name or when they look up your page if its not private.

if you follow 2 people that are holding a conversation you can see their conversation. but if you only follow one, then you will only see what they say (if you want you can go to the other person's page, if it is not private)

dm (direct messages) only you and the person who is dm'ing with you can see, and the person you are direct messaging has to be following you in order for you to dm them...

*im not sure about all the extra security settings
**i only use twitter from my phone, and i don't set my page to private,

but i hope that helps,

Welcome to twitter!
