What are two distinct forms of advertising?

My thought is something like direct mail versus multi-media (radio, tv). These two advertising mediums are purchased in two distinctly different ways (geographical versus demographical) and are used for two totally different purposes.

Or perhaps immediate response campaigns (which usually involve an incentive with a deadline attached) versus brand awareness campaigns (which are all about trying to create a household name).
