Why wont he text first?!?

So I was very close to one of my co workers & developed a crush on him. I quit & finally told him about the crush. He gave me his number & said we could hang out some time..I hate making first contact so he tweeted me "I gave my number and you never hit me up!" So I said fine, I will text him since its bothering him. Now he always looks for an excuse for me to text him, but won't text me first. I tweeted about a piercing I wanted & he replied "idk what that looks like , send me an example of one so I can judge how that will look on you". So I sent it , and he sparked up a convo via text. Then it went from that to him wanting to hang out & drink. He never asked me directly he just hinted around it on twitter once again & then told me to "text him". We stayed up played games, drank beers, ate food, Like an indoor date. He speaks highly of me, & seems interested but why THE hell is he always wanting me to make contact first ? Is this an ego thing ?
