What basically happen was Hurricane Sandy was moving toward the Northeast coast where a strong cold winter storm systems was slowly moving through the Northeast. The Hurricane and the winter storm system merge to together right before it made landfall and this resulted in a powerful hybrid storm system that formed in a way that modern meteorology had never seen before. Due to the merger, the storm actually became stronger after landfall which was different than what you would expected as hurricanes usually weakens when after they move inland. Due to the size of of Sandy, the combine energy of the hurricane and the strong winter storm and the unexpected increase in the forward speed of the hurricane right before the merger of these storm, the storm surge was much higher and push much farther than what was forecast. So the storm was even worse than what was already forecast by the experts as one of the strongest storms in recent times.
