as long as he knows you it shouldnt be that bad but maybe add him on your account and then start a convo and slip in asking to put in a good word for you. hell be more likely to at least say something back. as far as your friend goes he prolly just changed the subject because he felt like being between a rock and a hard place. it can be very difficult to ask ppl to pull those kind of favors, esp if hes not that high up in the company himself. i understand the financial difficulties n hope it works out, but try not to get your hopes up too much, with companies like that you usually have to know someone to get in. good luck!
