I graduated high school 20 years ago and have been working in high schools since college. Bullying is not as terrifying as it once was, but it is more prevalent. Like the previous poster alluded to, there are more avenues for bullying.....Facebook, twitter, cell phone pics, etc. however, I think that society has gotten more sensitive to it. It seems as though there is more of an effort to stop it. 20 years ago, I think parents, other students, and even teachers were more likely to turn the other cheek, making the victims feel even more alone and hopeless. We are just now starting to do better. For a while, the solution was to fix what was wrong with the bullies. Waste of time...a school or group of kids can not make what ever it is that drives a bully disappear. The bullies need to be silenced, shut down or shipped out. Now the focus is on empowering victims and bystanders and creating a culture of intolerance of bullying.
