Look into cpannel and fantastic, included are some social networking software packages.
That will get you started.

Bigger than Facebook will be very difficult. It will take something unique and special. It will take a large team lots of money and time.

Start small maybe you can build it into a reasonable income. But you won't be getting rich.

You'll need a server to start ( your PC will work, but shared hosting is better )
You'll need to know a few languages... HTML PHP java ajax MySQL pearl....

Look into diaspora it aims to be an open source version of Facebook.
