I'm like that, we are awkward because we are so scared of fucking up we just don't type anything or type contrived un-us like things.
On the other hand he could just be a bit of an A-hole, but this looks so much more likely to be someone who just needs a little social experience. Tell you what, chat to him, actively just go on FB and chat ask him how he is etc... If he's awkward say, "Dude, enough with being the father of the awkward turtle chill!" or something less completely weird.
