How can you tell if a man really cares for you or even loves you?

I've been seeing someone for 6 months, my feelings are strong and he doesn't know. He's told me on more than one occasion that he loves me, but say's he is joking, when I have said 'You probably do' in order to find out, he takes it away harshly and tells me he doesn't! We get on really really well, but have both been hurt badly in the past, and both shy away at commitment and expressing our feelings. We are exclusive to each other though and wouldn't go with anyone else! Hope someone can answer my question!
