Here's what I recommend:

-Don't use things that say 'get 10997098478026 followers,' they don't work.
-Post most of the time, more than once a day.
-Reblog/like everything that takes your interest.
-Follow people who are interested in similar things.
-Follow people who follow back.
-When you post, tag everything you can think of.
-Don't connect to your Facebook, it's just something you don't do.
-But you can advertise your blog on twitter.
-Post saying 'follow for follow' or 'I follow back' or 'follow similar blogs' and then say what stuff you post.
-Have a picture of yourself, this makes it more personal.
-A good theme is always good.
-Most people who have lots of followers on tumblr, spend a lot of time online. You don't have to, but this might help.
-Interact with people, write comments on the photos you reblog to leave your mark.
-Have a good URL, mainly something that relates to the stuff you will post/reblog.

There's mainly two sides to tumblr; the 'hipsters' and the fandoms/band blogs.
