Are pet fancy mice good pets?

They are much better than hamsters! Of course it depends on your personal preference but in my opinion (and many others) they are better pets by far.

Mice are curious and intelligent. They can be taught their name, tricks, and potty-trained. Despite being nocturnal they often easily adjust to your schedule (although you should still respect your pet's sleeping patterns). Some mice may be jumpy, but that depends solely on its personality and does not describe mice in general. There are many mice who are willing to sit in your hand and ride around in your pocket. You just have to pick out whichever mouse you think has the best personality for you.

Mice are also quite inexpensive. The only con about them is their short lifespan and that they are very prone to tumors. Females are more susceptible than males, however. Females are also very social so you need at least two of them (although many people like to keep three so that when one dies, the other will still have a companion). Males, on the other hand, should be kept alone, as they are prone to territorial disputes. That, of course, does not categorize all males and some may get along fine if they are from the same litter. It is generally best to only house one male, though, unless you have a spare cage on hand so that you are prepared for any possible fights.

Up to three mice can comfortably fit in a 10 gallon aquarium. That is the best and safest type of housing for them. Their skulls are actually smaller and flatter than their heads so they can sometimes squeeze out of cage bars that are even 1/4". A 10 gallon aquarium with a wire mesh screen cover is escape-proof and larger and less expensive than most of the mice cages on the market.
