I have always heard that action speak louder than words, bu in your case it sounds like he just wants you to be a friend someone he can talk to and hang out with, a buddy, pal etc. If I wanted a relationship with him I would talk to him and let him know how you felt and if he doesn't feel that way I would move on to someone else.
