what does 'education without character' meant?

Just as war is peace and ignorance is strength (Read 1984).
Anyway, education without character means that you know academic stuff, but you rebel against authorities and commonly accepted social rules(which one culture terms common sense). You have pleasure without conscience if you do something that feels right at the moment, but has consequences later, e.g. sex before marriage, drinking before driving. You have commerce without morality if you own a business and are so greedy you have a monopoly, bribe the government, or crash the stock market. You have wealth without work if you don't work for what you have, or if you look lazy compared to a majority even if you worked hard. You have politics without principle if you don't stick to a particular goal. Remember the whole deal with staying the course and doing the troop surge? Simply pulling out because of popular demand would have been rash even if no one supported war. |
