I think they're too distracting. I have a couple google+ accounts for playing games & some facebook and way too many twitter accounts for work, but nothing for real, personal use and they eat up my life. I can't imagine how much of a distraction they'd be if I used social sites to talk to people I knew.

They have their uses and benefits, but don't use them just because that's what people are doing today. There are enough distractions in life - if you have something better to do with your time, do that instead. There's always phone, email, video chat, text and person-to-person contact if you want to get in touch with somebody or they want to get in touch with you.
