Personal selling entails a straightforward sales-based interaction between two or more parties. One of these parties is usually trying to demonstrate the value and benefit of the goods or service they are trying to sell. You see personal selling all the time when you're walking into a car dealership and the associate comes to greet you and asks how he/she can help you. That's one the first (and crucial) steps in the personal selling process.
Direct marketing is a bit different; it doesn't necessarily involve any sales conversations or interactions. Direct marketing can be anything that allows a marketing message to be communicated directly to the customer or potential customer. It can be an ad in the mail that's sent to your home with products or images that are relevant to you. It can be an email in your inbox, an automated telephone message, or even a Facebook message. You could say that personal selling tactics and direct marketing tactics sometimes overlap, but they're different in that one is simply a sales situation and the other is a marketing/communications based situation.
