In general, try to relate the subject & activities to current events. This increases relevancy in the eyes of students.
Use online or social networking sites, etc. to increase their participation & enjoyment. eg. ask them to write a story for twitter - ie in 140 characters only. [it was done recently, with many noted writers taking up the 'challenge']. Decide on a topic. Give each student a number. Have each student post 1-2 sentences, in sequence [as per their number], online, such that each subsequent post Builds on the previous sentences & eventually completes some kind of story where the entire class had become involved, without knowing where/how it will go. Also, to add learning to the activity, each subsequent student needs to check for any spelling/grammatical errors in the previous post & correct it. Discuss, Debate on topics that are current. Instead of giving a topic, have the class come up with something they'd like to discuss. "What if...." questions can be a great way to involve students. And youngsters are truly innovative & creative at formulating & fantasizing . Try a multicultural activity. Choose a topic/theme. Create a collage or a quilt ; collect info on traditions, rites, rituals, beliefs, dress, mores, norms, etc. etc. Do something with Superstitions. Learn some handicraft or needlework or any art/craft technique from the past or from various cultures/countries/races & make something concrete. Hope some of these inspire :-) Add : Role playing. Puzzles - crosswords, word search, jumble words & such other puzzles based on the topic. Trip to Museums |
