Advertising is a big one. If you're ever on Facebook, mention something like "Angry birds" and watch the ads come up on the side.

Dating is another. It's HUGE.

Staying connected with family is a big one.

I also think it works as an alternative for people who aren't blessed enough to be able to socialize by any other means.
