NO, This sound like a trap and you may be putting yourself in danger. If I guy does not want to be seen with you or ignores you now --- Why do you think he will treat you differently. Attending a social event that is public and you have the means to depart alone is always a good strategy for safety.

The guy is seeking a gift from you --- invitation to a birthday party ---- Get real.
