Yes, it is. Actually right off hand, the only other alternatives, off the top of my head, would be Pay Per Click classified ads on and off-line, business cards, and even a bumper stickers.
Social media, or social marketing, is the most widely used since it is the most effective. However, there is a learning curve, and as told to someone else here, the best resource that I know of to get started for completely Free, with absolutely No strings is the 30 Day Challenge.
It's a lot of fun and great for a no-pressure learning experience.
