I think most of America tends to be center left on social issues.

And in terms of policy, they want moderation...but that puts law makers in the GOP in a bind...because the base of their party is fanatical...and are not interested in a functioning government.

If your criticism is "government is broken" and you are in a position to insure that is precisely the case...and the public in general see's through this tactic...it is a real put off.
