Sometimes it's for making money purposes. Example: you click on an advertisement and you gain a tracking cookie and if you buy that product, the person with the advertisement gets paid. Sometimes it's through a system where the person with the ad gets paid per clicks on an ad. Many search engines track your history to "assist" as they say in helping you narrow down future searches for what you may be looking for. Generally it's all about making money and data to see what gets searched the most etc. There are ways around all these forms of tracking, but for sure something somewhere will track you.
