how come mark zuckerberg is so rich when facebook is free ? how do they make money on it ?

They make money on advertisements. Notice that the ads on facebook will be similar to the last few websites you visited. For example, if you visit the site of sports team, when you get on facebook you will likely see ads for tickets to see that team play. This type of advertising comes at a premium, because it is targeted specifically to you. There may be other ways, but that is one source of revenue.
