As a teenager who has experienced both, I hope my input may be of help: my family just got the Wii U for Christmas, it's a very different experience from the regular Wii if your son has ever played with that. You can still use the regular Wii interface on the new Wii U, which I find to be very helpful with the transitional stage between consoles. The Wii U is also great if your son loves having friends over or if you would like to be able to enjoy games with him as well. The regular had up to four player games, my brother has informed me the Wii U can have more but I have yet to fully research that. It's an extremely fun and interactive gaming platform that you can enjoy with your son. Some personal favorites of my family are Super Mario World U and Mario Kart, but there's also plenty of individual games your son can enjoy himself. Now, for the iPod. That is on a completely different area of gaming. But I'll do my best to make a fair comparison. Currently, I have an iPhone, but I did have an iPod before that. The main reason my parents switched it to an iPhone was because I kept leaving my phone at home and carrying my iPod around more often so I could listen to my music, and it was not to their liking that I was putting music above staying in contact (mostly my fault). It sounds like your son is more interested in the gaming aspect of the device, though, and I have to say that Apple does offer quite a lot of apps for that (not to sound cliche). But, many of them are requiring Wifi most of the time, and if your son wants to be able to play them anywhere, the iPod would not be ideal. I would actually wholeheartedly encourage it if you were talking about an iPhone instead, but it's just harder to run everything without a network connection nowadays (Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, etc.). So, I'm going to have to recommend the Wii U, and I have to say that I think you'll enjoy it just as much as your son Smile
