How to talk to a girl on FaceBook?

Hi Im a college student and recently single my ex left me after a six year relationship. Ive always been shy and have a hard time talking to girl face to face and so making the first move. I dont know why i just cant talk to a girl unless she talks to me first so my friend knows about my problem and said hey why dont you just talk to them on facebook first. I thought it was a good ideal but turns out i still dont know what to say to girls i know and to new girls i dont know and just wanna have a conversation with so I ask whats a good way to talk to a girl on facebook. I need help seriously.
