How can I shut off automatic updates on the computer?

You did not mention what version of Norton Anti Virus so it is quite difficult. In general, you need to open Norton Anti Virus screen either from the program selection (e.g click "All Program" --> Symantech Client Security --> Symantech Anti Virus ) or look for it at the bottom right task bar (a security shield icon) and click on that. You should be able to see from the Norton Anti Virus screen menu a "Schedule update" or something similiar under the Configure menu. The rest of the setting is self explain.

You need to be aware that if you turn this off, you will not get up to date virus definition and your PC will be easily inffected by virus.
