Why do people jump on trends, even if they're totally ridiculous?

Why do people jump on trends, even if they're totally ridiculous?
First of all I don't understand this whole facebook/twitter fad. Everyone and their mother is leaving MySpace and going to these two new things, and when I tried them out for myself I thought, wow, these s8ck. They're so..underdeveloped in a sense. Where's the background artwork, the creativity, the video files, etc. It seems like a early, a very early and primitive version on MySpace. Yet everyone's like "OMG ITS SO COOL its like the new thing, its better than myspace." Twitter too,..so archaic in a sense.

Do people have any idea what they're doing or are they just jumping on fads because it's the thing to do?

It's so mindless.

Then we have all these phone obsessions, music obsessions, etc, fashion.
