I will do you the favor of granting your claim that we have a highly "backwards, unhealthy culture" despite the fact that you have not shown it through any proof.
So if we take your assumption at face value, do you think its a good idea then to allow this "backwards, unhealthy culture" to have easy access to firearms? There's something like 250 MILLION firearms in circulation. Do you honestly think its good to have that much firepower in the hands of your so-called "unhealthy" people? More directly, yes, it is very VERY important to address the concerns that there isn't enough access to mental health care, and see if there are underlying issues that might cause our culture to be prone to violence. But that doesn't mean we can't take guns away from the crazies in the mean time. You can address cultural issues if they exist while simultaneously limiting access to guns, especially assault rifles, in the mean time. This is not a "one or the other" proposition. |
