Why are so many Americans opposed to social security?

Love your neighbor and having money forcibly taken from a paycheck you earned are two completely different things.

Love thy neighbor is giving food to your elderly neighbor when they fall on hard times and can't afford it. Giving them some money to hold themselves above water for a little while, etc. Chipping in to pay for their medical care. Volunteering to assist them. You do it because you want to, because you have formed a relationship with that person. And you know that person is "good".
Now, the government comes to your house and decides to take a certain amount of money from you after you worked 9 hours a day, 6 days a week. They divide it up and send it to random people you've never met before: the lady who has 8 kids from 8 different men, the husband and wife crack heads, the 250lb twenty six year old who hasn't left his couch to look for a job in 18 months, etc. The elderly man who spent all of his money, refusing to save any of it--only because he knew that in a few years, he'd be guarenteed a check.
