WHY DID HE HESITATE WHEN I ASKED?

I'm a freshman. It's the second semester. At he beginning of the year I became friends with this guys Danny. He is absolutely adorable and a bit popular. I decided to ask him to WPA, just as friends. So today after school my friend and I went up to him(he was alone) and I asked if anyone had asked him yet.he said no so I said "then do you wanna go with me?" he looked shocked for a second and didn't say anything.if felt like an eternity but it was probably only 1 second.I quickly added "but just as friends" and he still hesitated for what felt like forever but was probly barely a second, then he said sure.I know he hesitated and now I feel like he does not like me at all and just felt bad for me.I texted my friend about it later, the one that was with us, and said "he definitely didn't want to say yes" but instead of comforting me and saying he was just surprised she said "well at least he did" now I'm freaking out cuz I feel like he doesn't wanna go with me at all! Plus he's popular and I'm not so I feel like that might be why he hesitated. I'm just freaking out basically! WPA= women pay all, so the girls have to ask the guys and stuff
