log into facebook
type the following into the address bar or click this link

http://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=notifications

change settings as you would prefer them

The reason I provide the URL instead of telling where to click is due to recent facebook changes, therefore some users may have a different series of buttons to click in order to access the same settings pages for the time being. If, however, your's is like mine, you may also click the Gear icon at the top right of your page, go to Account Settings or Privacy Settings, then in the left pane click Notifications.
