Not all employers check references. You'll just have to try that much harder and apply to that many more jobs to find employers where this isn't an issue.

And make sure you don't let this happen again -- connect with colleagues and supervisors on LinkedIn as soon as you land work! You can also use supervisors and colleagues from long-term volunteer projects. Good luck!
