What do people think of long distance relationships?

I know heaps of people say they won't work but I think that people today are more connected than ever before. For example, email, facebook, skype, phones, mobiles, text chat. Plus it's easier and cheaper to get around the world that what it may used to have been.
Personally, I think they can work as long as there is trust, honesty, commitment and a perceived end to the distance. But what do other people think? Has anyone ever been in a LDR that ended positively?
