Why are people on the internet so negative?

Ever since I started talking online in various sites, I noticed that people are more hostile online. It must be because they feel they can vent steam and not be afraid or embarrassed knowing they're not revealing their identity. If you do it face to face, everyone can see and it reflects you. Do it online and to everyone you're just someone on a computer typing, but people still get your message.
