Why do people feel they NEED facebook or twitter?

I don't use Facebook as i am around my friends most of the time, it would seem strange for us to use Facebook, and "I'm eating a bit of toast" is hardly going to change the world lol.

But people are social, and i guess some easily confuse virtual friendship with reality.

True story, my friend fixes computers, one guy comes in claiming over 1000 friends and was desperate for his machine fixed as he was going mad at home with no one to talk to. To me that was kinda sad, he tried talking to us while the machine was being fixed, and i know why he had no real friends - he was socially awkward lol.
