Start off by sending him a friend request, but also send a message to him because he might not know who you are, so he'll probably decline it.

Try this in the message:

"Hey, so I know we don't know each other and all, but I saw that you are friends with my friend on here. I'd like to get to know you better. I sent you a friend request, soo if you want you can accept it? Smile"

Well, that's what I would say =P
