facebook privacy....?

in the right side of our home page or any page while we use facebook...there's a bar which constantly shows updates done by our friends most recently like they became friends with one another...this person commented on this link...this bar page...likes this page...so..so..so...!!!!!!!!so any update of mine is also seen to my friends....!!!! i keep my chat off but still they get to know i'm online and if i'm talking any particular topic on a particular kind of page and commenting on anybody's photo which i don't want that they should know...they get to know it...how can i control this privacy...need a best and an understandable answer...thanks!!!!
guys i tried it i changed the option to 'only me'....but it's still not working....also restricting people from my list is not stopping people to see updates in the right side bar...the ticker!!!!
