If you have a broad and interested friendsbase on these social media platforms, your articles/links etcetera will get a viral effect if they are good enough. Lots of people will see it, digg it, link to it,... and you will get loads of traffic, and loads of incoming links.
If you want to take it one step further, there is an option to advertise on some of them, for instance Facebook, and it allows for REALLY great audience targetting... check it out!
