I am not sure about this. I have a son whom I have been trying to contact on Face Book. I have sent him numerous messages. I am NOT on his "Friends" list because he lives with my Late Wife's parents. They and I do not get along. All I ever see is a not that says "viewed on date" Not as you ask unread. If you are ignoring a person or not wanting to reply to a message, I recommend blocking the person altogether.
