More private than a phone?

Hi Alex,

I know this doesn't tackle the tech side of your question directly but, up to this point, is this something you and your mom have discussed together in depth? It might help to know that the struggles you and your mom are going through on this topic are not unusual. That’s why I would encourage you to keep the lines of communication open by sharing your thoughts and feelings honestly, but considerately, on a regular basis. Then, when you and your mom disagree about a subject, you will have established some good communication skills on which to rely.

A good starting point might be to ask your mom if she would be willing to set aside a specific time to discuss this matter, explaining that it’s very important to you. After letting her know in a calm and courteous manner how you feel, listen considerately to her perspective on the subject.

That way you won't have to carry the burden of trying to do it without her finding out, which could cause it's own set of problems.

There is actually a great book on this subject called "How to Live With Your Parents Without Losing Your Mind" by Ken Davis. I know the title sounds a little hokey, but I think what's inside could be really helpful. It's possible that you could find it at a local library but, if not, a general internet search should turn it up.

I hope some of this helps. I know it's hard when we disagree with our parents on these subjects, but keep your head up. There is hope.
