It probably just means that they have set their account on private, so that people they don't know or aren't friends with (on facebook) can see who their friends are. Once you add them you should be able to see who their friends are, but there are some people who have their accounts so private that only 'close friends' can see their friends. If they've sent you a request though, it should at least say if you have mutual friends. If it doesn't say you have mutual friends then I would avoid adding them, unless of course you personally know them. You can never be too safe, know what I'm sayin'?
