For most of us, social media that are related to our niche can help by giving our sites high-PR back-links. If you have a link to your site in your profile at a social site or, better still, you have your blog's RSS feed there. you have a good back-link.

As to monetization, social traffic is not as reliable when it comes to conversion. Unless you have a really good and unique product. The best free traffic is search engine traffic. Unlike social traffic, people from search engines need or want something. Social media traffic are mostly friends who just want to pay a courtesy visit.
