There is a difference between deactivating and deleting your account. If you delete your account it is deactivated for 14 days and you're able to reactivate it simply by logging back in. After 14 days the account is permanently deleted from Facebook and you have no way of getting it back. You can reuse your username after that on another account and also you can use the email and phone numbers you previously used.

Although it deletes all your content including posts and pictures and other app interactions it won't delete messages that other people have. It will have a blank avatar and your name will be "Facebook user" with no link to your profile.
