Should I friend this guy on facebook?

So I have been in an institute class at MCC for about 3 weeks and there is this guy that sits next to me during every class. We talk a little during the class and have sort of started joking around with each other. My friend and I sort of checked him out on facebook(not creepy like) and we think we know some of his relatives. I was asking her what she thought about me sending a friend request but she thinks I should wait for him to send one first. Your thoughts? I mean him sending one first would be ideal but that may never happen.
(btw: I am developing something of a crush on him if that makes any difference.
