It's more of a global thing than a western world issue.

Here are some fun facts for you:
- Country with most Twitter users is China (35.5 mil)
- Second most Twitter users by country is India (33.0 mil)
- The US only has around 22.9 million active users

It's probably also worth noting the Chinese govt. blocked Twitter (and has for years now as well as other social media sites). If you hate social media, that place may be worth considering.
